Frequently
Asked Questions
Q:
What Is VoIP?
A:
VoIP, short for Voice over Internet Protocol, is a technology that lets you make phone calls over the Internet.
Q:
How does VoIP work?
A:
VoIP converts your analogue phone conversation into packets of digital data that are sent across the Internet (just like email), and then reassembles the data into sound at the other end for a crisp, clear telephone experience.
Q:
Can I use a dialup connection?
A:
We recommend that you use Broadband Internet connection only. Since the quality of the calls is only as good as your connection speed. Tests of VoIP using dial up services have produced dropped calls, call lagging, and other call quality issues.
Q: What is broadband?
A:
A broadband Internet connection is a cable modem, DSL, T1, T3, LAN, WAN or any other high-speed, “always on” connection. If you have a modem in your computer that needs to dial an access number to connect to the Internet, then you do not have a broadband connection.
Q:
How good is the call quality?
A:
Technology advances in IP telephony transportation have made Internet calling as good or better than normal PSTN connections. This is mostly true for high speed Broadband connections, whereas dial up services have some way to go before delivering the quality of PSTN calling.
When calling in network, the quality is the best voice quality available. When calling regular phones, the quality is comparable to a traditional phone call using a traditional phone provider.
Note: Standard of voice quality will also depend on a number of factors. It can be from having poor Internet Service Provider connection or minimal bandwidth. Other factors are the quality of your handset, the quality of your modem and or router and Internet congestion.
Some “High Speed Broadband” connections doesn’t necessarily mean they will meet the task of transmitting voice packets in a timely or reliable manner. This slow delivery of packets (packet loss) will have an effect on the voice data and therefore the quality of the voice being received. To verify your connection is reliable you can use a product called packet tracing software to reveal network problems. We recommend a product called “Ping Plotter”. You can download a free trial version at http://www.pingplotter.com.

Q:
Can I use my computer while I´m talking?
A:
Making calls over the Internet doesn't affect your computer usage. In fact, while you're talking on the phone you can continue to surf the web and email without any problems.
Q:
Does my computer have to be turned on?
A:
No. Your computer doesn't need to be on but your Internet connection needs to be working. . GoDialing uses your Internet connection and not your computer.
Q:
Do I Need to buy a new phone?
A: No. Simply plug your phone into a GoDialing phone adapter and start making calls. The phone adapter works with virtually any touch-tone phone. Corded and cordless telephones both work well.
Q:
What is a SoftPhone?
A: A SoftPhone is a downloadable software that allows you to use your computer as a telephone, dialing through your SoftPhone and speaking through either your computer’s microphone and speakers, or a headset. When using a softphone your computer must be turned on.

Q:
Shouldn't calls over the Internet be free?
A:
Calls made completely through the Internet are free. There is no charge to call other GoDialing members. When you call a traditional telephone or cellular number, although much of the call still travels over the Internet there remains a connection to the traditional landline or cell phone network at the other end. The traditional landline or cell phone networks charge GoDialing a connection fee. The good news is that since most of your call still travels across the Internet GoDialing calling rates are either much lower on a per-minute basis or are already priced in to the Unlimited Calling Plans.
Q: Does it work on Mac/Linux?
A: Yes. If you would like to use a computer or “soft” phone, there are many available for all major operating systems.
Q:
How difficult is it to set-up once I get VoIP service?
A:
It’s easy. When you order a telephone adapter or mobile WiFi phone through GoDialing your products arrive at your door already configured. Take the telephone adapter out of the box, plug in your phone and modem, and start making calls. If you’ve order a WiFi phone just turn it on. It’s a cinch.

Q: If my broadband Internet connection goes down will I lose my voice service?
A: Yes. Our phone adapter is connected to your modem which in turn is plugged into your household electricity. If you have a power outage your modem and therefore your ability to use Internet phone will be disrupted until power is restored. If that presents an emergency to you, we recommend keeping a mobile phone on hand.
Q:
What are some of the advantages of using GoDialing?
A:
Probably the biggest advantage of a VoIP phone service is the cost savings over a traditional phone service. The savings are substantial. Other advantages include feature rich Plans (caller ID, call forwarding, voicemail, call waiting etc) and portability (you can take your phone adapter with you).
Q:
Does the person I am calling need to have a GoDialing account?
A: No. With GoDialing, you can call any phone number, anywhere in the world. Calls can be made to local, long distance, mobile, and international numbers. Calls to other GoDialing numbers are always free.
Q:
How do I know if I have a VoIP Phone Call?
A:
You won’t know. VoIP calls will ring and sound like any other call.
